April 2, 2012 Ciudad Constitución, Baja California Sur - The town of San Juanico, long considered to be a popular destination for surfing is running into hard times in the apparent absence of legal authority to bring order to the crime wave that has forced some foreign residents to leave the community for the time being. An expat resident with over 15 years living in the local community recently expressed through a letter his concerns over unchecked crime in San Juanico; where a group of thugs are seeding terror while the authorities silently watch with their arms crossed. For many years foreign residents had enjoyed peace, tranquility and waves for surfing in San Juanico. Now, under the current administration people have witnessed various acts of violence including kidnappings, robberies and threats from a subject who is fully identified, and has been reported to the PGJE, who so far has done nothing to stop these crimes. In the meantime a group of investors from Argentina has decided to postpone the construction project of a cabin style hotel after learning that local residents are threatened by theft and crime that has taken control over the population located 150 km away Ciudad Constitución. source... |

Whoa; I just used the search function on sudcalifornio's page for "San Juanico" and found some rather-disturbing articles:
Violent Assault In San Juanico; 6 de octubre de 2011 Violento asalto en San Juanico The victim told the story yesterday of how he was at home around 10pm when four masked subjects wearing dark clothing and military boots broke into his home. They beat him, put a plastic bag over his head, robbed him of about $5,000 US, and loaded him into a vehicle. They tossed him into El Aguaje arroyo about 10 km. from San Juanico, a town that over a little bit more than a month has lost it's tranquility from a wave of robberies. Four days after that story ran, another detailing threats against the denunciantes naming the two who did it; 10 de octubre de 2011 Queremos paz en San Juanico! Five days after that story ran, the police commander was replaced; 15 de octubre de 2011 Hay nuevo comandante en San Juanico Follow up 2 weeks later; investigation moving slowly 1 de noviembre de 2011 Lentas las investigaciones: caso San Juanico A month later, promises made to look into it and other similar cases in La Paz and Los Cabos; 29 de noviembre de 2011 Se investigar en su despacho a Howie Lange 3 and a half months later, a truly-curious twist: an assault complaint against the same ex-delegado who stood by the robbery victim and complained of irregularities; 21 de marzo de 2012 Denuncian a pareja de profesores agresivos; golpearon a una joven durante una fiesta No word on why those aggressive teachers beat up that poor girl; nor why there was no action on her previous complaint since it wasn't the first time. ![]() What is going on in that town? ![]() |

Crime is on the rise and much of it seems to be perpetrated by "outsiders" - criminals from outside the local area. Some of them are on the run from problems with the law back "home" and many others are simply deportees with criminal records. The second group is particularly dangerous as they are established criminals, have no local ties/roots and feel they have nothing to lose. Either way it is definitely something to watch out for - there is a reason why all of our local neighbors here are especially guarded around folks not from the local area.
Sad but true...
