I am currently shopping (online) for health insurance for my Mexican wife. So far "Plan Seguro" looks like the best deal. But check with more than one agent on the internet, they seem to be quite different in versions and prices offered for products from the same ins. company. A friend of mine had recommentd AXA, but I am probably going with the Plan Seguro.

I am seeing some negative comments on Plan Seguro when I search for it. Had good rates, but these comments are offputting, so I am still looking. Of course, my wife is eligible for government health care. I myself am fortunate to have the Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield which actually has "preferred providers" here in Puerto Vallarta.

fjack1588, have you see this thread?

http://www.talkbaja.com/showthread.p...t=medical+care

It touches on several options & may or may not change your feelings towards Seguro Popular. It's my personal belief that the care & facilities are going to vary greatly from location to location, but my personal bottom-line is that I feel that overall the Seguro Popular system is extremely over-utilized to the point of lower efficiency/effectiveness.

Keep up the research & you'll eventually find something that your comfortable with.

I have had good luck with Seguro Popular, not here but in Guadalajara, I had 4 fractured vertebrae, 6 hour operation by one of the top Nuro Doc's in Mexico, a plate and 7 screws about $30,000.00 US The other was at another general hospital, Gall bladder removal. Both operations where free. The first operation I had to go have an MRI done and had to pay for that. A lot of people do not know that most general Hospitals in Mexico are teaching Hospitals, A lot of the top Doctors in Mexico work in these Hospitals 2 days a week and then go to there private practices. I read some place these Doctors do this so that the can get a Government pension after 20 years. It is true most rooms are for 6 people, it is also true some one needs to be there 24 hours a day to take care of you. In my case my Mexican wife slept on the floor by my bed for 20 days. If it is a teaching Hospital you will get a lot of attention, along with staff lots of Nurse students. The clincs are a crap shoot, most do not speak english so beware, also the clinic Docter needs to be your best friend, He and only He can refer you to a specialist or the General Hospital. I under stand from Punta Banda there is a Seguro Popular clinic in Maneadero which is not to far. The worst thing about Public Hospitals is the food, I lost 13 Kilos in 20 days, unless your wife is good about sneaking in food from the outside, the guards check everthing. In General the Hospitals are very clean but plain jane, but the Doctors and Nurses are very professional.

I think that IMSS will slowly go away, I also understand that Seguro Popular is Caldaron's baby, and wonder what will happen when he is gone?
