Default Gun Permit

The violence just gets worse. I know guns are illegal in Mexico. I will have a German Shepard for my home protection. Does anyone know if you can apply for a gun permit for your home in Mexico? I bet it is hard to get one and I bet you have to be inspected and harrased by the federalies if you do get one.

If you don't belong to a hunting club, you won't be getting a permit to import a gun. Even then, it's a daunting and expensive task.

Best thing to do is not talk about it and do what you think is necessary. That part should be clear enough.

I have looked into the matter myself, and its not an easy thing, they don't usually just give permits to anyone who applies. Now having said that, there has been a big increase in the past few years as far as the number of guns sold by the mexican military to civilians. The mexican military operates the only gun store in the nation (DCAM), in Mexico City. They sell handguns, rifles, and shotguns of most brands to either hunters, or for personal protection. Heres the Q & A section in the army website, its in spanish:

The best way is through a local hunting club. The trick is to become good friends with members of the club who usually have a very good connection with the military. Play the politics first and you will be amazed out how quickly all the "requirements" can be met.

I speak from experience...

Thanks you: I will do that. I will miss not having my colt 45 auto. Need to get a good friend who knows all the good hunting too.

Default Re: Gun Permit

Ditto's...

Some take this "gun" thing a lot of directions... however, this situation certainly does show a differing approach to "gun" control... between Mexico and the United States...

Not sure whether having this degree of gun control, is justified ... or not...

It certainly does not appear to have reduced the amount of homicides in this Country ...

But, Mexico is not the United States.. and the thinking behind the adoption of this type of gun control was desired by the people ... or I may be wrong and it was just something the people were given to live with by "politicians" ... a concept which has given many in the US pause ..... and to reserve final judgement on gun control to the individual ... not the Government...

To defend one's self .... is a natural right .. and is part of the old: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ... IMHO and I see there are more than a few Mexican folk that would like to have the ability to protect themselves from: kidnapping, beheadings, torture, dismemberment, killing of family members, dogs.. et al..

Which seems only fair, given operating conditions some must face daily ... living in parts of Mexico ...

Wiley............

I don't think "gun control" was wanted or mandated by the people of Mexico. It was established by the Mexican government to keep guns out of the hands of Mexican citizens.......as to make it more difficult for the citizens to rise up against the government for another revolution.

Now in Mexico, the guns are in the hands of the government and the criminals.............the government doesn't seem to be willing or able to control the crime problem, and the criminals get to shoot up anything and anybody they want.

Would probably be a different story if the citizens were armed.......give the criminals some competition. You can obtain a weapon in Mexico, you just have to go through the procedures.....and as Ron says, it helps if you "know" someone.

I would imagine that if there was cartel violence in the US like there is in Mexico, it would have a different outcome, partly because the citizens in the US can have and carry firearms............

People ask me why I carry a gun in the US................I tell them it's because I can't carry a cop.

Well, I am considering getting a handgun for protection to carry in my vehicle - not because of Mexico but more because of US. As a single woman traveling with kids, I have run into some very weird situations since I had my kids. I find I am more of a target now than when I was just a single woman bopping along and I realize it makes perfect sense because I would probably do just about anything to keep my kids 'safe'. I do travel with dogs now where it use to be just a 'dog' and 2 of my 3 dogs are over 100 lb and can be very intimidating. However, what are my chances of being able to carry a handgun over the boarder back and forth legally for self-protection? In this thread it is not sounding good and being a woman makes buddying up to the hunting club not sound all that promising as well.

Forget it. If you get caught [remember....they are searching vehicles these days] you won't see your kids for a very long time......unless, of course, you are very wealthy.

Perhaps, since you have apprehensions concerning some of the neighborhoods you visit, you should reconsider your itinerary and stay away from those places.

I can almost tell by your stubborn inquiry that you truly don't comprehend the gravity of the crime, that of carrying a gun, here in Mexico. Guns coming into Mexico from the US are probably the most obvious reason for the war in Mexico today, and the authorities see any weaponry as a assault on their efforts to fight this nonsense.
Don't volunteer to be a part of that.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you for the input. I prefer NOT to have a gun while in Mexico and it is NOT because of the neighborhoods anywhere, it is being remote and hiking that I have found some very weird men in the states with weapons being very inappropriate towards myself and others. I would like to have one for the states as I will be traveling with the kids here some as well, just don't know where to bury it before I go across the border to Baja. I have no intention of carrying one illegally and I have lived 46 years without one thus far, I am sure I can make it a few more :) Just checking here to see - I live in New Mexico now and everybody and their grand-daughter is packing in their homes and vehicles so I forget what it is like to be somewhere that guns are not as normal as your car keys.

Gari

Take a CCW class in New Mexico and get the New Mexico permit. It should be good for several states EXCEPT California and Colorado.........any gun shop in New Mexico should be able to explain which states honor a NM permit, and also provide info on the CCW classes.

As for stashing a weapon before you cross the border, my suggestion is to either find a friend in the San Diego area to hold it for you, or get the smallest storage unit you can find on the US side and keep it there (along with other stuff).

RE: weapon type, take a look at the Ruger LC 9, 9mm

Ruger Centerfire Pistol

or the Smith & Wesson Shield in 9mm.

Product: Smith & Wesson M&P SHIELD™ 9mm

However, before you buy anything, go to a range where you can handle and shoot various weapons...and get the one that you can shoot and are comfortable with......

just my 2 cents worth

hi teniente, this is great and will do!!!

we all 3 have been to an indoor range and shot several times, mostly 9 mm but i know i am still very much a novice so this helps.

we will be going through CA and probably CO so what do I do when I get to the borders there? same thing - rent a small storage unit? guess you can't check these into a safety deposit box at bank ?!?!?

Unload the weapons, put the ammo in the glove box/console and put the weapons in a locked container in the trunk. The storage unit is for more long term use.

A local NM gun store should be able to help you out with varous states CCW laws.
