But that close to the SD bay, don't they monitor large ship movements enough to at least narrow the field???

Exxon Valdez had radar...
they were going to repair it someday. Kinda pricey; ain't it? I think I read the ill-fated vessel was not so-equipped. How about that attack sub that roared up and crunched the kids off of Honolulu some years back? Skipper kind of scanned with periscope before, but not very well. |

Re: 3 dead, 1 missing in yacht race crash off California coast
I still can't believe they cannot come up with the name of an opposing vessel knowing the time the sailing sloop went off the radar and just a few miles south of San Diego. We do track large ship movements, don't we? Makes me wonder how many pangas actually make it through going north vs the reports we hear of those they catch???

Re: 3 dead, 1 missing in yacht race crash off California coast
I read awhile back that the cartels will put a vehicle through the line with 10 kilos of loosely wrapped pot just to attract the dogs and create a distraction for the three or four vehicles trailing a few cars back in other lanes that are carrying the real cargo.
It makes me wonder if they do the same thing with the pangas?

Re: 3 dead, 1 missing in yacht race crash off California coast
Much of the speculation now is pointing to the Aegean crashing into one of the Coronado islands based on SPOT tracking. That seems hard to believe with an experienced crew and having a good chartplotter/GPS on board. Units that we use all have alarms that go off warning if the current course is leading our pangas into shallow waters/submerged rocks. The SPOT tracker may simply have drifted into the island with other debris if it did indeed collide with a larger vessel.
I am still waiting for some kind of news of what large ship movements were happening in the area around the same time. If they were naval vessels I suppose we might never know... .
