Default What about buying a travel trailer in Baja?

So, I am looking at travel trailers also to travel up and down the west U.S. coast from Baja to Vancouver, BC with my kids. Is there any chance the prices will be better south of the border? I am looking for an oldie but in decent shape. I am running out of time to buy one here and so thinking to do so later in the summer.

Just checking . . .

I don't know, but I would imagine much better deals/selection up here.

Albuquerque, man. Plus you'd get to check out how it works for a while on the way to Baja(passing near all sorts of repair facilities with parts.)

Pick of the litter right now from $1111 to $3333:

Looks like about an 18'; twin axle, fridge $1200
Holiday Travel Trailer

Smaller single axle $1500; doesn't say so but has fridge vent on outside.
1978 Camping Trailer

Little bit bigger 5th wheel if you have a pickup truck; fridge $3300
Camping Trailer- 1988

I wouldn't even entertain the thought of buying a trailer down here. If you do happen to find one for sale, chances are that it would have expired or no registration as well as no ownership document.
People don't often bring their RVs down here to sell. There isn't much of a market to give a fair price for the vehicle.
Of course, there are tons of trash trailers abandoned in beach camps, but ......forget that idea.

Best you shop in the states. A good area to look is out around Palm Springs where there are lots of older, retired folks who have put their RVs in storage for the last time. The price of gas has grounded a lot of travelers and some good deals are available.

Good luck.

I agree with Dennis. Trailers down here (in Mexico) for the most part have been sitting for a long time without any maintenance. Breaks may be rusted, bearings siezed up or rusted, springs weakened by rust. It's just too much of a risk that you'll buy something with hidden problems. Even if you buy one in the States, save a few $$ to take it to a mechanic and have the breaks, bearings and suspension checked before making any long trips. When you're shopping, I'd also have a good look at the roof for damage, cracked seals or cracked vents also.

California's Inland desert areas are a good place to check. Lots of trailers available and the dry, salt free environment is less harsh on the important moving parts of a trailer.

I own a trailer that I use a couple times a year to travel up North. I open up the hubs and keep the break springs and bearings lubed up regularly. It's amazing how fast things deteriorate sitting near the ocean.

It's best to wait for a rainy day to shop for RVs.

Right now seems to be an exceptionally good time to buy an RV. The curent economy and price of gas has brought the prices way down. I am looking for one right now to bring down to our abalone project...
