Met the governor of Baja California last night when he came to Tecate to open the new CAREM museum,,, about 400+ people there, along with state and local officials.

Max and I were introduced to the governor and the mayor of Tecate, and we presented them both with our new book:

He looks excited to have it! LOL

Here is the newer back cover, with reviews from Greg Niemann and Graham Mackintosh:

Cool... I figured you had met him because of the good work you do helping a local industry.

I also met with José de Jesús Quiñónez Ramírez, the deputy secretary of tourism... and he too seemed very open to new ways to improve tourism to Baja.

Thanks for your book order Ron... we worked on some small touch ups yesterday we spotted in the run of a few books we made to bring to CAREM last week.

Worked with Max today on the final edits and changes... I think you all will appreciate the work we put into this to present the 48 California missions as thy were founded from 1697 to 1834.

The book goes to the printer tomorrow and will be ready to ship out by the end of the week, we hope. Please take advantage and order before the month ends to get in on the special! http://oldmissions.com

We have a Facebook page and today I posted two pages from the book on one of the missions (in Baja) if you would like to see the format: Old Missions on Facebook

Thank you!

The book has basic locations/ directions to every mission, however space limits the detail and so I do recommend either obtain Dave Werschkul's excellent book 'Saints and Demons in a Desert Wilderness' or go to our Facebook page and request more data. I have the GPS of every found site.

You know me, I am more than happy to help! Check the book, and if you need more directions than given, please ask!

The book is an international one in that we give equal time to ALL the California missions... 27 in Baja and 21 in Alta... Here is Mission #20, the second in Alta California, following San Diego...

Our web host (Dick Van Bree, electraweb.com) has added a zoom in version of the 1757 Jesuit map to the bottom of our web page... North and South halves of 'California' as it was known about 1747 and published in 1757... All the missions active in 1747 are shown, plus three 'started' missions beyond San Ignacio (San Juan Bautista in the Santa Clara mountains near Punta Abreojos, Dolores del Norte which became Santa Gertrudis, and Santa Maria Magdalena which could be these ruins: http://vivabaja.com/109 ) Have a look at them, bottom of page: http://oldmissions.com

It's great you ignored the border and followed the "Mission Trail" through California too.

Thank you for noticing!

There was no border and no United States on the west coast when the missions were founded (1697-1834)... so why do so many California Mission books say San Diego was the first California mission? It was the 19th, founded 72 years after the true first mission, at Loreto.

The other myth we bust with this book is that missions were founded from south to north, a day's ride apart... They popped up as needed when funds and personal became available, all over California. The next mission after San Diego was by Monterey (Carmelo)... The next mission north of San Diego by distance is San Luis Rey (in Oceanside) and was the 43rd mission!

The mission trail (El Camino Real) will be the focus of our next book... a revision and expansion of Max and Erline's book 'California's Camino Real and its Historic Bells'.

I would be very interested to see how you map that one through our local area. The locals can't seem to agree as they have identified two different roads here as being El Camino Real. I have heard from a few others that they believe that at some point El Camino Real was re-routed so it is possible they both could be right...

That sounds more like the old (pre-pavement) main road, and not necessarily the mission trail? However, both were very close to each other from El Rosario north to San Diego.

The Camino Real north of San Borja was mostly nothing more than a cattle track... No major road building as had been done between Loreto and San Borja, as the Jesuits had done. The Jesuits were removed from California before they had time to construct their typical roadbed between San Borja and Santa Maria. The Franciscans and Dominicans only did roadwork were the terrain required it... and yes, I do mean they had neophyte laborers do the physical work.

Here is where Harry Crosby has placed the Camino Real in your area (1977):

Here is an example of the Camino Real about 10 miles south of El Rosario:
