Default Tijuana to be first in Mexico with digital TV

President Felipe Calderon announces the change at inauguration of Tijuana Innovadora

TIJUANA — This city of more than 1.7 million residents next year will become the first in Mexico to make the switch from analog to digital television, President Felipe Calderón announced Thursday during a visit to Baja California. Tijuana's proximity to the United States helped determine its selection as the country’s pilot city, Calderón said, and the rest of Mexico is scheduled to follow suit by the end of 2015.

Calderón spoke at the inauguration of the 11-day Tijuana Innovadora expo, an event that includes exhibits, talks and workshops aimed at showcasing the city’s potential in a range of fields — from manufacturing to gastronomy.

The president’s visit also included his first tour of Mexico’s new El Chaparral port of entry, which is scheduled to open Nov. 1. While at the site, Calderón pledged that there would be no delays to enter Mexico once the new port opens. He also said southbound lanes at the existing Puerta Mexico border crossing will not close immediately.

During an initial transition phase, Calderón said, both El Chaparral and Puerta Mexico will be partially opened. The new facility, with 22 inspection booths, is expected to reduce peak-hour wait times and thus encourage more cross-border tourism and commerce, the president said.

Calderón’s assurances came after months of petitions from government and business leaders who fear that the opening of El Chaparral, just west of the current southbound lanes, will generate congestion. A permanent U.S. connection to the new facility has not been funded and likely won’t be completed until 2017, so Mexico has built a provisional, five-lane connection to El Chaparral.

At Tijuana Innovadora, Calderón said the changeover from analog to digital “is a key step that will allow Mexico to achieve universal access to broadband.” The move will allow Mexico to compete better in the global economy while giving Mexicans a greater range of channel choices, he said.

“This brings them into the 21st century,” said John Eger, a professor of communications and public policy at San Diego State University. “This is a major step forward.”

At the opening ceremony for Tijuana Innovadora — held at the Tijuana Cultural Center, or Cecut — Calderón addressed a crowd of more than 1,000 that included some visitors from California.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders was honored with a seat at the podium together with the president, Baja California Gov. José Guadalupe Osuna Millán, Tijuana Mayor Carlos Bustamante and Tijuana Innovadora organizer José Galicot. Also present was Army Gen. Alfonso Duarte Múgica of Mexico’s Second Military Region, who has been at the helm of efforts to combat drug trafficking in Baja California.

Calderón’s visit came less than two months before his six-year term ends. Event coordinators hope that Mexico’s president-elect, Enrique Peña Nieto, will participate in the expo’s closing on Oct. 21.

Digital TV is the worst, nothing but problems, sketchy, and not reliable, forces ordinary broadcasting out all together.
Cash Cow for the broadcasters, forced payment for the public.
Canada went all digital some years ago and i wished for the old analog to return.
God help us all.

I felt the same way when cellular service left the old analog system to convert to digital.

Oh,,i don't really mind the Digital broadcasting, when it works right,,but its very sketchy when the weather is bad or there is SunSpot activity.
I got so tired of heavy pixelation when the weather was bad, that i wished for the days of the old analog signals,,which where far more reliable and Weather proof.

We're ready for the digital. We get the San Diego stations in HD digital from Rosarito using a roof mounted antennae. With digital you either get the signal or you don't no snowy in-between.
