No one is surprised when the narcos flex their muscles with impunity. The narco power grab didn't happen overnight, and it had many co-conspirators. This is what can happen anywhere in the world when corruption goes unchecked and becomes institutionalized. It's hard to draw a line in the sand when there is no sand left.

Mexico is like "Sons of Anarchy" where people are violently killed right and left and the police never get involved in the story line........in a town named "Charming" no less.

At least no one in Mexico expects a happy ending at this point.

At this point, they would gladly accept a stalemate or even a cartel win. Anything to stop the violence.
I believe their hopes are unrealistic since cartel violence has infected many facets of society. Murder has become the Lengua Franca of Mexico.

Well it isn't a pretty summation- but sadly it's true. We both see the downward spiral in real time with our own eyes. It's really a shame what has happened - just since I got her in 2005. When I got here Baja was thriving and hopeful it would flourish with ex-pat retirees. What ex-pats the crime wave didn't clear out, the NOB housing bubble and world economy did. Hundreds of thousands of tourist industry jobs have been lost in Mexico, not just Baja- everywhere. Construction jobs came to halt too. So when the local crime, corruption and narcos started to take over Baja- people weren't in a strong frame of mind to resist. Everything is tied to one-term politicians- even our security. The Rosarito Police Chief failed his confidence test, but is a member of the ruling party.

We had a visitor recently who told me: "I'm not afraid of the crime in Rosarito, I'm afraid if something does go wrong the police are too corrupt to help me." I get that. Safe tourism is a hard sell when the Police of Chief can't pass a control and confidence test.

And in spite of it all, Mexico finally decides to thin out the expat ranks of the fiscally undesirable by raising the qualification bar to above Social Security levels. Renters will be leaving and buyers will be more scarce due to their limited income.
I'm inclined to think the ranks of immigration agents will be pumped up to tackle this plan. I base my guess on the expanded ranks of the border personnel. Mexico has seen the value of revenue collection and is going for it.

We'll they killed the goose that laid the golden egg, they might as well eat it too. The peso has been 13 to the dollar for a long time and inflation is killing the locals at the grocery store and gas pump. A lot of poor families migrated to Baja for work and the cost of living here is about double the mainland. So the locals are screwed. Yet there are no great bargains for tourists that create business either- I read a recent supposedly good review for Puerto Nuevo where they had to dodge the menu-pimps (cgwcd) and weren't impressed with the current $30 price tag (no pesos pricing).

They are trying to skim the cream from skim milk. When the monthly income requirement for a visa exceeds the average Social Security retirement check- they are pretty much saying "go away". They must think rich people will retire in coastal Baja put I think that window of opportunity for them has closed. I was hoping to enjoy the benefit of many new restaurants and attractions to this area- not it being a ghost down of boarded storefronts between holidays. Rosarito is doing OK attracting domestic tourists- but none of this was ever designed, priced or financed with Mexican tourists in mind.
