Hello. I have lived in Mexicali for many years [2006 onward] and have many friends in Tijuana. I am retired [early retirement] and worked in San Diego and still maintain a condo there. The last 4 years I have been travelling between Mexicali, San Diego and San Luis Potosi. The plane fares are inexpensive and I keep my car at my house in Mexicali when in Central Mexico.

I have an INAPAM card and get 50% intercity bus fares and like to travel around Central and West Central Mexico by bus. Alan

Welcome to TalkBaja, Alan. I don't know much about Mexicali except they say you have the best Chinese restaurants in Mexico.
What do you do for laughs up there?

We usually do the family and friends party outside in the yard and barbecue thin marinated steaks or go to taco stands. Also eat at Chinese restuarants frequently. I like to go walk at the street tianguis which are everyday on some closed street somewhere. 6AM to 1 or 2PM because of the heat. I hang out at the OXXO 2 blocks away and we have a 8AM chat group everyday except Sundays there. There is also many more coffee houses the last few years that are popular for hanging around for all ages.

People here in Mexicali are generally friendly and polite as is usual in most of the Republic. The indoor malls are crowded in the summer with people hanging around to cool off. It is not as boring as some seem to say and the heat in summer seems to never slow people down at all. We have a few community swimming pools that are almost always crowded and a, used to be private, club that now for $40.00 pesos we go to and swim and play tennis or just sit under an umbrella in a lounge chair and watch the others. Alan

Welcome to the forum Alan.

There is a lot of ag-business in and around Mexicali. I figure with that, A/C repair shops and Chinese restaurants Mexicali has a bright economic future...

Thank you everyone for the welcome.

I wouldn´t know about business here except the competion among the many Chinese food steam tray places has dropped the prices over the years. We were at the border crossing in el centro Mexicali lately and stumbled across one that had $25.00 peso 2 item plates with a large portion of fried rice or 3 items for $30.00 pesos that was OK.

The nicer Chinese restuarants do cost more but seem to not raise their prices over the years.

Also a few weeks ago my car started making a grinding sound after being parked in Mexicali since early July. It was also blowing cool not cold air. I had the berring in the AC compressor replaced and had it fully charged for $900.00 pesos, seemed cheap to me. Alan

Hey Alan....do you still have ties to San Luis Potosi?
I'm sure you've been to the notorius San Luis Rio Colorado, below Mexicali. Is that still a whorehouse mecca?

Just a weird bit of information about Mexicali -

There are so many Chinese in Mexicali because of the large number of laborers brought in to work the mines.

More railroads than mines, I believe.

Seems we've lost Alan, which makes me wonder all the more about what seems to be a case of San Luis confusion.

Ohh goody. Then we can revitalize our blossoming friendship with secret stories about San Luis, the whorehouse town.

They were here to build the All American Canal system at the turn of the last century and you are right, many stayed and some Chinese did well in business during the beginning when this region started the argiculture boom back then and afterwards.
