Default SENTRI Denied!

Yesterday, I went for my interview and was denied. The letter that was sent to my account said that I don't meet their strict standards, but of course, I wasn't told what they were.

I plan to appeal it, so I sent an email to the CBP Ombudsman's office for the reason. After I find that out, I'll do the appeal.

It won't stop me from moving, though, and luckily, I only have to drive across the border once or twice a week on the weekends unless I'm doing a big shopping, which is only once per month. The rest of the time, I take public transportation

What could be obvious to me? The application was filled out correctly, and I brought everything that was asked to the interview. Maybe the officer didn't like my low income.....

I doubt that's it. I wonder why they didn't explain their decision?

It sounds like when they ran your prints thru the FBI something came back that would disquafily you for a Sentri Pass?

I already passed the FBI background check with my SS number, plus I have a DOJ clearance for my job. Since I'm in the security field, I have to be squeaky clean to be able to work.

I guess I'll find out when they research it. I got a confirmation email, so I know they got it.

I discussed this general topic with US Consul General Andrew Erickson once. He'll likely correct me if I am wrong, but the SENTRI program and qualifications are independent of the other trusted traveler and gov't security clearance programs. Even people with high levels of gov't clearance have been denied a SENTRI. You're entitled to know why and have a hearing. Just go through the appeal steps.

True. A good friend who had recently retired and had been a senior treasury agent was denied. Turns out it was a over a minor incident involving police when he was in the navy, over 40 years ago. He went through the process of getting his record expunged, reapplied and was approved...

mmmm.. .. . don't think so . .. . their job is to do their job, not to take out their frustration on the applicants. You weren't asking for a favor or special treatment. You have equal protection under the law and the right to equal treatment. If you fit the qualifications, then you fit--end of story. No room for anyone with a bad day to throw a temper tantrum and if they do, then it can be their job. They are public servants, not arbitrary wielders of public powers.

On the other hand, I have heard that they look closely at your family as well--spouse or offspring sent had any drug related problems with the law? Was your current address formerly used to deal drugs? Is/was your car previously owned by someone who was under suspicion of dealing drugs?

These are scenarios that would disqualify an applicant even though the offending actions weren't committed by the applicant.

I met a guy who didn't get his sentri b/c he had gotten a DUI 10 years earlier.....

That's right. Your friend should have had it expunged. Then SENTRI wouldn't have known he had so little regard for the law....and my safety on the road.

Drinking and driving doesn't bother me, unless the driver has an accident. At which point I don't care if he's been drinking or not--injured or dead is still injured or dead no matter what the cause.

Why should one accident be more acceptable socially than another? A tragedy is a tragedy is a tragedy no matter what the root cause was.

And why should someone dictate how someone gets home safely? A safe trip home is a safe trip home is a safe trip home.

Why doesn't society allow more opportunities to get somewhere besides using an automobile? In the USA you are dependent on the car--no public transport, walkable or bike-able areas. So, why not work towards these long term goals?

Just food for thought--not flaming.

An accident is just that, a DUI is an on-purpose.
