Default Violence Plagues Rosarito Beach

Playas de Rosarito.- Kidnappings, murders right out on the street and extortions have returned and have increased this year, due to the fact the municipal authorities have become lax when it comes to security and a lack of discipline in the municipal police. The head of the Business Coordination Council says the next city government should reconsider the idea of placing a military officer as chief of police.

These were the statements of the president of the president of the Business Coordination Council of Playas de Rosarito, Manuel Padrés Pérez-Verdía, who said that in the last two months there have been three murders in broad daylight on boulevard Benito Juárez, and the question is: where do they go, how could they escape, considering the boulevard only has two or three exits.

"We have seen an increase in violence, fortunately the last few weeks there has been nothing, but in the last two months there have been murders in the public streets in broad daylight, with total impunity, nobody knows who it was, there have been kidnappings, there has been an increase in home robberies, car thefts, while public safety has not yet been overwhelmed, we do not want that to happen," he said.

The hotel operator said that compared to the prior municipal administration, the city is losing ground in matters of safety, above all so far this year in 2013, as in addition to the high impact crimes, there are complaints and comments on the extortions by police of tourists and residents.

"I do not know why they have become lax, but this is how we view it, that is the sentiment, the perception we have, that there has been an easing in this situation and crime has returned, or it has been permitted or tolerated. Once again the police, for whatever reason, have gone back to extorting tourists and citizens," he said.

I know little of the new municipal president elect - Silvano Abarca. Any idea if things are expected to change under his administration???

He lives eight houses from me. He was a prior municipal president. He is remembered for providing for the elderly. Everything we know and hear about him is good (aside from the campaign smears). He said in today's paper he would build the downtown tourist boardwalk to attract tourism. That's really good news for the local economy. Today they are paving our street. Good to have the mayor around I guess.

They do arrest the robbers, fraudsters and drug sellers but they're back within a week. That's a design flaw in their criminal justice system- which even a new Mayor wouldn't be able to change much. Any move towards law and order would be greatly appreciated by everyone here. Most of the tourists are Mexican now and Rosarito is probably safer than where they came from. It's all relative.
