A few minutes ago, a man identified by Security sources as Tijuana Cartel member Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix was executed. The murder took place in Hotel Marbella located in the city of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

Right now there´s a police operation taking place at the Hotel, members of Federal, State and Municipal police are taking part of it.

According to the first versions, a kids party was taking place when a man walked in and shot Rafael Arellano Felix.

Right now there´s a strong presence of both police and military personnel in the Los Cabos-Cabo San Lucas corridor, checkpoints have been established through the area.

Military sources inform two men arrived in a vehicle and killed Francisco Rafael.

Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix served a sentence in the United States after being extradited from Mexico. He was set free in 2008 and deported to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

There are 2 versions right now, according to Los Cabos local news, Arellano Felix was killed by a sicario dressed as a clown in a residential area known as El Tule, no official information has been given, however both versions report a heave presence of military personnel and police agents from Federal, State and Municipal agencies all over the city.

I think you are correct. They sing like canaries and get shot like clay pigeons. One report says the shooter was dressed as a clown.

The State Attorney General, through it chief, Gamil Arreola Leal, confirmed that the person murdered was Francisco Rafael Arellano Félix, oldest of the brothers of the family and who was the chief of the powerful Tijuana Cartel.

The crime occurred during a family party being held at a location known as Ocean House, which is a palapa and garden for events beside the ocean on the San Lucas tourist corridor, very near the Puente de Tule, some 6 miles from San Jose del Cabo.

All this happened among more than 100 people, including children, enjoying a party entertained by the Sinaloan musical groups Mimosa and Los Toritos. Witnesses confirm that suddenly a person dressed as a clown entered the party and a few yards from the entrance, he headed to where Arellano Felix was, shooting him first in the head, and two more shots to the body when had fallen to the floor. The attacker immediately escaped in a vehicle which was waiting for him outside the palapa. A little after that, most of the invitees had immediately left the location, extremely startled by the crime they had witnessed moments earlier.

The former head of a major Mexican drug cartel was shot dead by an unknown gunman at a family party Friday night, newspapers said.

Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, 63, the former head of the Tijuana cartel, was killed in a hotel in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas in northwest Mexico, said the newspaper Reforma, quoting what it called unofficial sources.

A gunman went into the party and shot Arellano Felix in the head and chest, Reforma said.

The body was identified by one of his children, said another paper, El Universal. It quoted unnamed military and law enforcement authorities.

An Interior Ministry official confirmed there was a shooting at the hotel but would neither confirm nor deny the victim was Arellano Felix.

Arellano Felix was arrested in 1980 in San Diego, California, for drug trafficking and upon his release on bail returned to Mexico.

In 1993 he was arrested in Mexico and jailed on drug charges, and in 2006 was extradited to the United States. There, he was sentenced to six years in jail after confessing to selling drugs to an undercover agent.

He was released in 2008, winning time off his sentence for good behavior, and repatriated to Mexico.

One of his brothers was killed in a gun battle in 2002 and three others are in prison.

The power of the Arellano Felix family among Mexico’s violent cartels has waned in recent years, but they do control part of the border with California, experts say.

Now the cartel is run by a daughter of the man reported killed Friday and by one of her sons, analysts say.

Now we wait and see what this does to the security situation up here. I doubt it will have a calming effect on what is already a horrible increase in homicides.

Based on the crowd that guy ran with, it is amazing that nobody else at that party had a gun???

Good point. Perhaps they figured it was better to just let the clown kill his target and run than get crossfire involved with this many children around. That would have been a lot worse. It doesn't sound like the clown was there long enough to make balloon animals yet- just did his day job and left.

There are soooo many informants. My favorite is the one where this Iranian guy went to Mexico to recruit some Zetas to assassinate a Saudi ambassador in NYC for a mere $1.5million. Who in their right mind thinks that ANY drug runners would choose $1.5m over the full weight of the US gov't on them? They make that much in an hour? a day? one load? and no one cares.

Mexican Clowns Protest Violence, Crime

Several hundred clowns from across the Americas attending the 18th International Clown Convention took to the streets of Mexico City to call for an end to violence and protest organized crime groups’ use of disguises to rob and murder people.

The protest started on Wednesday, the opening day of the convention, in a Mexico City park, where the clowns gathered to share smiles, jokes, sweets, balloons and plastic noses with children of all ages.

“We clowns aren’t thugs or killers. We reject violence because we are peace lovers and responsible for spreading joy and happiness,” Llantin the Clown, one of the convention’s organizers, told Efe.

The protest was staged just days after former Tijuana drug cartel leader Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix was gunned down at children’s party in Los Cabos, a resort city in Baja California Sur state, by at least one gunman dressed as a clown.

“We reject the idea that the killer was a real clown and are sure that none of our colleagues would do something like that. It’s sad that they are trying to stain this image of kindness and love,” Llantin said.

“We do not want any more violence or crime. We want to work so Mexico and other countries will have happiness. We are bringers of joy and peace for little ones and their families,” Llantin said.

The clowns also managed to break the world record for laughing, managing to laugh for 15 minutes straight.

The International Clown Convention, also known as the “Laughter Fair,” ends on Thursday.

Mexico hosts the clown convention each year, with similar events held in Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, organizers said.

Ecuador and Honduras will host their first clown conventions in 2014.
