Default Residents of Rosarito at the mercy of criminals

- The effects of a devastated economy and unemployment in this municipality are factors in the increase in crimes such as robbery of all types.

Reports of robbery in homes and businesses, and assaults on passersby have increased so far this month, due to the difficult economic situation in the municipality.

In colonias like Plan Libertador, Lucio Blanco, Cañón Cordero and Constitución, citizens agree that they live in fear of lurking crime and unrest.

According to the State Citizens Council on Public Safety, during 2013 in Rosarito vehicle robberies increased 1%, home robberies 27% and commercial robberies 66%, all in comparison to 2012.

In matters of violent crimes in Rosarito, murders increased from 31 in 2012 to 54 in 2013. But robberies are those which have increased since the start of this year in that families which are victims find it difficult to report these crimes, in light of the lack of confidence with authorities, even though this encourages impunity.

So, it will be a major challenge for the Chief of Police, Jorge Eduardo Montero, to regain citizen's confidence, and he has now begun to establish discipline in the police department.

woooosh note: The number of murders in Rosarito Beach increased 74% from 2012 to 2013.

This truly disheartens me. Rosarito Beach was such a wonderful little town when I first step foot there 45+ years ago. So much has changed.

Although I can say the same thing for many communities I remember from my youth NOB...

We built our house on the same spot in Rosarito Beach I used to surf at in my 20's. It's heartbreaking.

The right man (Police Chief Montero) is in charge of security for at least two more years. He is re-certifying his men so he can trust them. But in two years and another election- who will be the next police Chief? This has to change and I have heard there are proposed changes that would make it possible for Mayors to stay in place longer than two three-year terms.

Part of the local security problem is this lack of police department continuity. Every election the Police Chief changes based on local politics- not who has the best chance of establishing security. and order. Chief Montero worked hard for six years to improve security for Rosarito and thenRobles put Trenti in place- who tore it all down (and more) in his three years as Chief. Rosarito never gets ahead of the curve.

Do you consider the major downtown area reasonably safe during the day, both for yourself and leaving your locked vehicle?

Our house is in the "major downtown area". I consider it a nice residential area with many professionals living here. Mayor Silvano lives about 8 houses away and a police commander on the next street. Almost every Mexican who parks here in the day to enjoy the beach opens their hood and unplugs a few wires. I do park at the grocery store, in front of the bank ATM and Home Depot without problems- but they all have "guards". We'd never take a chance on parking at the movie theater and expect the car to be there when we got out from a matinee. 7am is the time most street crime takes place here, not sure why- maybe people going to work and leaving property vulnerable. I do consider moving around in the daytime reasonably safe but never safe enough to stop being aware of everything around us. If you do leave the house in the daytime- it's the house you need to worry about- not your car.

The problem lies in trust and chance. Our friends who will no longer visit (day or night) tell us they aren't afraid of being a random crime victim, they are afraid if they do become victims, there is no one they can trust to help. The Rosarito Chief of Police doesn't trust his own men, and neither should you. It's a game of chance and you can't dress badly enough or drive a car ugly enough to not be noticed.

I just read on MexConnect that Playas de Rosarito was one of the 20 most violent cities in Mexico for 2013.

That's not good. I remember when Rosarito Beach was the #1 Spring Break destination for American college kids. It really wasn't that many years ago but it sure seems like it. We took a chance on Rosarito Beach like a lot of people did at the time. Now it's time to watch from a safe distance and see if our investment becomes a total loss or if the Baja Image Committe can slap enough lipstick on the pig for it to recover in our lifetimes.

I still say Baja norte is safe enough for tourist day trips and overnights at the Rosarito Beach Hotel where all guests wear wrist bands for security. Chances are you can enjoy the new Baja food scene and wine region with with no problems at all. But living here with the crime all around you is another matter. jmho

Thumbs up Re: Residents of Rosarito at the mercy of criminals

My dos centavos...
Even though I own a home in San Antonio Del Mar, I probably qualify little more than a tourist, in that I'm (we're) here on a monthly or more basis. However in the 8 years we've come down, we've never had a serious problem. Knock on wood.
We try to be the most casual of pochos possible. We are friendly & respectful, and that is what is returned to us. I love it here. My better-half a little less so (for various other reasons, too). I will retire in 2 years and I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time getting to know, hopefully, a healthier Baja.

You're one of the lucky ones then. I know there have been several cartel busts in the last 3 or 4 years at SADM. One I witnessed 1/2 block from us on Cantil, was from owners that no longer live there renting out their house to a cartel member. Also due to all of the empty houses being easy pickings many have been robbed. Our house was burglarized in 2011 while we were shopping in San Diego. We left a few months later and have no intentions of ever going back.

There is no barrier around the property and the "guards" would let anyone through the gate without verifying whether they live there or not. Security is a joke there.

Yes. Fortunate I guess. We have full-timers as neighbors. They watch the place & we reciprocate with gifts. You're probably close, regarding security. Rewarding them with a few Tacos Yaqui & repeating your address to them, goes a long way
