Default Baja Driver's License

We moved here from Jalisco and have a current Jalisco driving license. We need to go change our address this week and were just wondering if we will have to take another written test, or if they will just change our physical address and issue us a Baja license. I know that when you change from one state to another in the states, you do have to take the written test for that state ....... Maybe it is the same here?

Since it's a revenue source, I'm sure you'll have to pay for the full treatment.

Where are you? Regulations and requirements may vary depending on whether you're in Baja California or Baja California Sur. In La Paz I didn't have to take a written or driving test even for my initial BCS license, but I had two valid foreign licenses plus an "international license" attached to one of them. They did want my passport, INM residence card, and proof of residence in La Paz Municipality (electric or water bill).

We're in Rosarito, and we also have current CA licenses which we just got to replace our TX licenses. It would be nice if they will just give us a Baja license and change the address, since we have a valid and current Jalisco license ......... but somehow I doubt it. We have proof of address and all other paperwork we need.

My wife had a drivers license issued in Mexico City. All she did was went in and said she moved to La Paz and they gave her a new one.

Do you need a BC license? Do you drive Mex plated vehicles?

I never saw the need for one either driving US plated cars with insurance for both USA and Mexico. Not sure what a Mex DL would be needed for.

Maybe his car has Mexican plates. Don't know about Jalisco or Baja California, but in BCS there's a regulation that your driver's license has to correspond to your car's plates (rentals are an exception). You can use a US driver's license with a US-plated car, but not for one registered in Mexico. The DL also comes in handy as photo ID, e.g. for large debit card transactions. Most cashiers and bank tellers are more familiar with it than they are with the INM residence cards.

Some of our vehicle have California plates and some have Baja-nacional plates, so yes I do have a Baja drivers license. I really am thinking about dumping my california plates completely as the registration and insurance costs are now higher in California. I recently took out a bi-national insurance policy for our new Expedition.

The annual cost?

$880 MXN

Can you get a Mexico license on a Visitor visa or do you have to be on a Resident visa (either temp or perm)?

Thanks in advance,
