Default Robberies in Cd. Constitucion - help translating

I understand most of this article, but the part I'm having trouble with is the last paragraph. Does it say someone's gassing the residents so they sleep while they are being robbed? Or am I way off. And...what are "Los amantes de lo ajeno"?

Article:

A ver...

Gotta agree with you, although my Spanish ain't great:
Quote:
"...The(these) lovers of other people's things have gone into particular houses in the night, when the owners are asleep, using some kind of gas or other substance so that they don't wake up, and in so doing taking what they want without the slightest care, there being two cases that are known...San Martín and...Cerro Catedral."
Sounds a bit unlikely, doesn't it?

I agree, sounds unlikely. I've read a lot of articles in this newspaper where fact checking didn't seem to be a priority.

The article says that they are putting gas or some other substance into the residence to make sure that whoever is inside does not wake up.

That sounds very scary to me.

"amantes de lo ajeno" means people who love what is not theirs, a term often used down here to refer to thieves...

Thanks BG.

I've never heard that term before.

If it's true...it is scary, and it's happening somewhat close by.

Ladrones [los amantes de lo ajeno] [thieves] have been drugging yard dogs in Mexicali since at least 2000. They use a spray in some cases, neighbors have seen them do it.

I suppose drugging a dog with gas is quicker than killing them with anti-freeze laced chicken. We had a Labrador poisoned in Rosarito that way.

One dog was out for at least 12 hours. I don´t know what would do that, Possible pills in some meat.

If I remember correctly, yrs. back, there was a reported incident or
2 involving what is described, in San Felipe, some sort of gas used, then robbing
victims at nite, sounds a bit hard to believe, seems the gas would
disipate

With multiple testimonials, I have a hard time thinking it ain't happening.

That is so sick. Life has taught me that the most dangerous animals walking the planet are humans...
