Days, hours, minutes & seconds remaining until the new passport requirement goes into effect for US citizens returning to the USA from Mexico. Up until that time a valid ID with a birth certificate may be used to prove citizenship and re-enter the country. After that time a passport will be required. A passport is now required for normal access driving across the northern Mexican border into the USA. If you bring a birth certificate and drivers license they will probably let you in but only after spending some time in secondary inspection area.
Just get a passport and avoid the hassle.
