Passport Question again

My son is coming over to visit us and a friend wants to come with him. My son and grandson have their passports but the friend only has his birthcert and id card. Whats the worst that is going to happen when they cross the border to go home? Anyone have any personal experiences? k

The few accounts I've read recently say to expect secondary and a lengthy delay, but that they will not detain you indefinitely.
