I posted this on Nomads, too, but I know I will get good info here.
I have never gotten FMTs for my kids but reading all the requirements it looks as if that is necessary now. Can anyone puhleeze prove me wrong? The US requirements for minors under 16 state that a birth certificate is still fine for return to the US. Plus, last time we were down the Mexican immigration would not issue my wife an FMT with just her birth certificate and ID. We had her (just expired) Passport with us but they said that wasn't OK. I got mine and we just kept going.... Guess it is time for passport cards for the rugrats...those books are pricey now! |

I would suggest you just get the passports. You will need them if you decide to fly and at some point they will probably REALLY require them when driving back across the border as well...

Well, right now the cards are significantly cheaper and it is not the drive north that I am concerned about. Plus, they are only good for 5 years for minors.
It is the Mexican authorities I am concerned with regarding FMTs. I have never gotten the FMTs for my kids before but with all these rule changes I would hate to get turned around at GN for them not having them. |

Soulpatch, I'm not fluent enough in Espanol to search the INM website <<that was a subtle hint, Kate!

Well, first off, I'd get regular passports for the kids (not cards). If something happened that they had to fly back to the US, they wouldn't be able to use the cards, and it would be a PITA to get passports for them down here. It can only be done in Tijuana or Cabo San Lucas, and it takes time.
I can't find anything on the INM site about FMMs for children, and the US State Dept. Mexico page doesn't specify either. I'd just assume that they may need them and take it from there. Sorry I'm not much help! |
