CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AFP) – A police officer and a 15-year-old boy were among 16 people killed in suspected drug attacks in Mexico's most violent city of Ciudad Juarez, local officials said Tuesday.

The border city across from El Paso, Texas, is the epicenter of spiralling attacks which have left almost 10,000 dead since the start of last year, despite a military crackdown on the country's warring drug gangs.

The 16 deaths in the past 24 hours included four double murders, according to the deputy attorney general's office of northern Chihuahua state.

Armed men shot dead the police officer, who was seeking to resign after receiving unspecified threats, in the middle of a street overnight Monday, the office said.

Heavily armed men shot dead the 15-year-old boy outside his house in a separate attack, it added.

More than 1,100 people have died in Ciudad Juarez since the start of the year, according to an AFP count based on police reports, despite the deployment of some 8,500 troops there.

President Felipe Calderon has deployed more than 36,000 troops countrywide in a controversial crackdown on organized crime.
