It was a very unfortunate event based on what I have heard and my heart goes out to the couple. It sounds like they really wanted to just assist somebody who came looking for help and took advantage of their generosity.

I spent a few years a decade and a half ago living high up in the mountains in the Sequoia National Forest, an hour or more away from the nearest law enforcement response. Cabins were routinely broken into, vehicles and motorized toys stolen and of course guns/rifles were always high up on their list. I was always watching out for those quiet types on meth and/or growing some funny looking plants seeded in between the forest ferns. In my few years up there I saw a lot of crime including a young woman who was raped in her home by a burglar less than a mile from my place. Crime is always tragic and it should always make you angry, wherever it happens.

I suppose the advantage I have is that those years of living by myself, relatively isolated and with little hope of any help from law enforcement was that it taught me how to take care of myself and my property. There is no single answer that works for everybody but I do advise that everybody should think about what they would do in such a situation and how they can best prepare themselves to prevent it / deal with it.

I have my own and feel relatively safe. Hopefully this will serve as a wake up call for everybody, wherever you live, north or south of the border...
