Monday, May 30, 2011 14:16 ![]() The new canal will be built along the Río Colorado river and will replace a system that collapsed during a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit state capital Mexicali in 2010. The total project investment is expected to be in the region of 2bn pesos (US$172mn), the authority said in a press release. The tender process will begin in October with a view to starting construction in November 2012. Work is expected to be finished by the beginning of 2013. The irrigation canal will be "one of the largest projects of its type," said Conagua director José Luis Luege. On completion, the canal will serve 33 villages over a 28,000ha area. Luege also announced the construction of a regional emergency service center in Mexicali. The aim of the center will be to ensure the area has the necessary infrastructure and equipment required to meet water emergencies. source... |
