Conagua investing US$128mn in phase II of Baja California irrigation repairs

Mexico's government will invest some 1.52bn pesos (US$128mn) in the second phase of a project to repair water infrastructure damaged by an earthquake that hit northwestern Baja California state in April 2010.

Work will involve rebuilding main canals and distribution channels for irrigation districts 10, 11, and 12, national water authority Conagua said in a release.

The authority is currently carrying out studies and executive projects for the reconstruction work, which should be completed by 2013.

The government spent 1.51bn pesos on phase I of the project, to repair the DR-014 irrigation system in Mexicali, according Conagua president José Luis Luege.

The first phase guaranteed irrigation for 181ha of land, as well as repairing the Río Colorado-Tijuana potable water pipeline. Some 332km of canals and 308km of drainage lines have been repaired since the earthquake.
