Shots for Kids & Dogs
Ok, I am one of 'those' people who does not immunize in general. However, now that my kids are older and we are traveling, I have begun but thus far they have very few. What should I consider getting for my kids before we get to Baja based on what people see there? I would assume based on the Mainland things like TB and the Heps would be good. What am I missing? Is meningitis an issue at all? Is there a tourism department that I should/could contact to assist me with public health issues I should be aware of?
And, regarding dogs, what do they need? I assume an up to date rabies, but maybe Parvo or something as well? Thank you :) sb/gari |

Re: Shots for Kids & Dogs
I'm not sure about Baja California, but in Baja California Sur dogs are required to have a rabies vaccination every year. I think in the US it's every three years? My dog gets other shots as well, such as bordatella, giardia, and "polivalente" vaccines that include parvo, canine distemper, parainfluenza, adenovirus, and coronovirus. He also gets heartworm and various anti-parasite stuff, along with Frontline Plus.
For myself I don't get anything other than a tetanus shot every ten years if/when I remember. But recommendations are likely to be different for kids, so it's probably a good idea to check. Your doctor or county health department should have info on what's needed for other countries. |

Re: Shots for Kids & Dogs
There is a controversy now about overvaccinating your pets and many pet health experts attribute the rise in cancer in dogs and cats to this.
Most reputable vets will tell you that once the dog has attained 5 years of age or older it has acquired enough immunity to forego further vaccinations. I stopped vaccinating my dogs after age 5. Many vets esp. in the U.S. continue to do this as it is a large percentage of income to their practice. If you websearch "jean dodds vaccinations" you will find more info to make an informed decision. She is the foremost researcher in overvaccinating and based in California. |

Re: Shots for Kids & Dogs
A "Health Certificate" can be requested when re-entering the states. Not often is it asked for, but it could be. I've been asked.
Be prepared. Also.....you may want to consider changeing your vet to one down here. Most are highly qualified and the price for their services is only a fraction of what American vets charge. They also issue the health cert........my vet doesn't charge for this. Try to find that level of service NOB. |

Re: Shots for Kids & Dogs
So I did just check and all my dogs are current on rabies but it is a 3 year window. Can I get them into Baja with this and then get a vet there, get updates as needed and health certificate for travel back into states?
Also, looking at immunizations for my kids while there. Anyone hear of anyone in Baja area having following: Typhoid? Hep b? Polio? Meningitis? Remember, my kids do NOT have the basic requirements so they do not have things like polio already under their 'belt' so to speak. So far they have tetanus and Hep a. Thank you, Gari |

Re: Shots for Kids & Dogs
By the way....how many dogs do you have scheduled for this trip? Mexico probably won't ask for anything, but they do have limits as to how many.

Actually......there's a number closer to six that rings a bell. I don't care enough to research it anyway.
