Default cell phone???

ok, how do i deal with the cell phone issue? i use my phone for work and see that lots of you have US numbers though you live in Baja? Can I do this and keep my local number?

Sorry to blow up the threads today. I just have to get these last things wrapped up before I come and I am slammed all week with work.

Check with your cell phone carrier......they may have a plan that extends into Baja......although you will probably pay through the nose in roaming charges.

If you want a local (Ensenada-Rosarito-TJ) cell phone, go to Movistar and get a cheap phone, in the $35-$40usd range and just buy time (200 pesos at a time) as you need it, don't sign up for any long term plans.

Movistar has several offices/stores in the above areas.........in Ensenada, there is a store just as you come into town on your right side as you pass the fish taco stands.... next to a Starbucks and a pharmacy, across from McDonalds...parking in the rear of the store....or look around on some of the side streets. Also a store in the Wal-Mart plaza just south of downtown on the way to Punta Banda........opposite side of the parking lot from Wal-Mart.

If you are an ATT customer they have a plan called "Viva Mexico" which allows for calls on both sides of the border. My phone rings no matter where the call is coming from or if I am in the US or here in Mexico. You can keep your same number so your US friends won't be paying for international calls.

I have the least expensive plan at just under $60.00 it gives me 450 minutes for either US or Mexico calls. They are higher cost plans for more minutes. You will probably drop any type of data use as it is very expensive here compared to the states. I don't miss text messages all that much anyway.

Sr. Teniente, Sir, is there a reason you recommended MoviStar over Telcel? Just curious.

........Ah, nope. No special reason.....I use Movistar because that works best from my Ensenada home location (Telcel and Nextel not so much) and get great service in the areas that I travel.....Ensenada, Rosarito, TJ.......

Better service without dead spots is an excellent reason!

Nope, Star shiner has not shown up yet.....still looking

Thought I would do something different for a change and get a cell phone that provides service from the house and not at the cell phone store.

Oh! THAT place!

A trustworthy looking lab rang the gate buzzer earlier & said she'd been sent for the the cookies, l gave the lab a fistfull of treats to hide her over & she was last seen galloping North with saddlebags full of cookies. I suggested she avoid the Constitucion gendarmes!

Forgive me, but 2 days up & 2 days back....there ain't any living rock star & his little rockettes worth that trip!

Sorry for the hijack!! Back on topic!

Our Verizon phones work in the Ensenada area. I can not speak to the cost however, or what plans they have available.

We have family that comes down and uses their AT&T phones down here while on vacation. They purchase special add-on plans for voice calls, messaging and data service. They tell me that the charges are reasonable if you purchase the plans BEFORE you come down.

Out here on our stretch of the beach we use movistar as telcel service is extremely spotty...

I was told by the local Verizon office (I also think you can check on line for the coverage map) that Verizon provides a limited "bubble" of service area to Cruise Ship ports of call, Roaming charges apply....ymmv

AT&T certainly is the better option from a U.S. provider as it works on the same system as the Mexican cell phones.
