Default Escaping from Orcas Island, WA via NC to Baja!

Hi All,

Valeena here, and I am planning on moving to somewhere in BCN, with my elderly mother (a stroke survivor in a wheelchair) my three cats and my (already) Mexican husband, Miguel. Miguel is in Durango with his folks, his Dad took ill some time ago, but is doing very well now and is just waiting for me to give him the OK to meet us in TJ.

Anyway, I came to Orcas in April temporarily (instead of going straight to Mexico) through an old friend who promised me the moon (help with caring for my mom, a job and a car as mine died seconds before leaving NC) and to acclimate me living on the west coast again. None of the above has occurred until last week. I am finally on a program here that will pay me to look after my mom, and I am almost positive that I have a buyer for my house in NC. And a car has been offered to me. Yippie! Just ironing the particulars on that. So, if all goes the way it is planned, we may be there within the next 3 months or less.

That being said, I would love it I could get some information about areas to live driving distance to San Diego, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of TJ. I am needing nurses aides or just care aides for my mom, live-in or otherwise, and I need to know about getting our household things across the border.

I have some information of course, as we have been planning this move for quite some time, but as I'm finally only now 1,300 miles away instead of 3,000 miles away, but excited reality is finally settling in

I don't ask for a lot do I? .

Thank you in advance for all suggestions .

Valeena

Welcome to the forum Valeena. You guys sound like perfect candidates for the Ensenada area. Punta Banda / Baja Country Club area...

Valeena

There is a great care facility in the Punta Banda area of Ensenada, and I believe they do home visits:

Residencia Lourdes Pacifica Convalescent Care, Specializing in Alzheimer, Dementia, Nursing & Convalescent care, beautifully situated with views of the Ensenada Bay.
Scott Astorga 646-154-2732 (Ensenada phone number) e-mail: scottastorga (at) yahoo.com

Maybe Dennis will jump in with a review.

Depending on your location, travel route, weather and time of day, San Diego is anywhere from 1hr 15 minutes to 2 hours away from the Ensenada area. For frequest border crossers, enrolling in the SENTRI program or having a Passport Card and using the Ready Lanes will expidite border crossing times into the US.

A great source of information on Ensenada and the Punta Banda area is the Punta Banda Newsletter:

Hey! Looks like we might be neighbors x 2.

We have been on San Juan for 25 years, and are in the process of buying a place in San Quintin.

San Quintin is another couple of hours south of Ensenada, and lacks the strong gringo network that exists there, but we like being further south and still within reach of San Diego should the need arise.

Good luck with all that you're facing, and enjoy the hunt for the perfect place for you and your family. Sometimes the hunt is the best part!

So much has happened since my first post so here's the update:

Mom, cats and I did 'escape' Orcas Island last October and landed in Rosarito Beach. This was so not in the plans to be this far from the border, BUT....WE LOVE IT HERE!!!! We have a huge 2 bed/2 full bath modular. Our landlord and his lovely wife (live next door) are THE BEST ever. He had a wheelchair ramp built two days after our arrival for Mom. AND built a deck off the roof for us. The beach access is two blocks away.

There is also an assisted living/gray care facility walking distance for when I need to go to the US for the day and quite reasonable.

Husband joined us from Durango in January and got a job at a local maquiladora, although he and 20 others have been laid off, I don't suspect it will be too long before he's rehired or another employ comes his way.

I have posted many pictures on my FB page https://www.facebook.com/valeena.caballero so take a look.

The only problem I am personally having is that I need to work from home as I'm still the only caregiver for my mom. We have a new cable (Cablemas) company but their internet sucks so doing any Virtual Admin or Virtual Call Center and the like is out.

Here's a funny- LOL--I'd like to sell cupcakes at the daily flea markets here. Of course I'd make them terrible cute and yummy. I have a marketing plan that I'm working on plus a way to package so that they don't melt. Does anyone have any thoughts this and or on a another home biz ?

I'll be posting pics and keeping more in touch with y'all.

Have a great Baja Day!

Before you get started in a "public venture" I suggest you get the proper immigration documents that allow you to engage in a business and also your Hacienda (Mexican Tax Agency) paperwork in order. If you do not have the proper documents you could be in a heap of problems.
