You may want to research the wait times for pedestrians at San Ysidro. The mornings are long as well as other times.....I mean hours.

Dennis is right- it can take hours to cross on foot because you and thousands of other students cross every morning. Sadly more and more children are taking drugs across the border- so everyone is checked closely.

Playas to the border by cab is cheap enough and the road was widened a few years ago so the traffic never backs up. Find a place you can afford and feel safe walking around in. Playas is probably a better "lifestyle" choice than living in downtown TJ- but there is plenty to do everywhere. jmho

Doncha just love it when people come on here with questions, then they just fall off into the abyss. It makes me feel ignored and less likely to help in the future.

Never feel bad for trying to help. Students are busy- esp. during the holidays. The info is always there for the next person looking for it.

You're supposed to have your computer inside a phone booth or it won't have super powers.

I really don't understand them yet. I promise to be careful. The posts here aren't likely to ever need much content moderation though...

Hey, everyone thanks for your replies. I fell off the Thanksgiving abyss. I took some time to explore TJ, checked out a dozen places, as well as crossing on the three separate days of the week. I now have Sentri. I will be trying tomorrow morning to test out the worst case scenario.

I've settled on Playas de Tijuana. I'm going to concentrate my search near the coast. I will commute with my motorcycle and I intend to stay here in the area for quite some time. I would not advise any American living in central Tijuana based on what I've seen.

There ya go! It's good that you did your homework. Downtown TJ isn't for everyone. Playas is a good landing spot. With SENTRI you will have virtually no wait time by car. On a motorcycle, even in the regular lanes you could weave to the front of the line in ten minutes or so. It would seem crossing by foot would be the longest wait for you. I'm not sure they if they have a SENTRI pedestrian lane (maybe). Good plan either way. You're set.

There is a SENTRI pedestrian lane. It's faster than the SENTRI vehicle lane. Rarely anyone in front of you.

I'd advise ANYONE who crosses the border once a year or more to get a SENTRI. It costs $125 for five years. That's $25/year. If you save yourself two hours waiting per year (calculated on one crossing per year), then you have 'paid' only $12.50/hour for your time. Considering that many people will not work for less than this . . .. . you get the idea. If you cross more often, the cost per unit of time saved drops to pennies per hour.

I hadn't heard that they were going to do away with it. . .. .I last used it just two weeks ago. I got to walk past about 2 hours' worth of people waiting. . .. the US CBP waved me through past the gate and I went directly to the border agent. . . . past plenty of people who were waiting patiently.

I think it's the best $125 I've ever spent in my life.

The sentri pedestrian line at San Ysidro is definitely still in operation...
