Default Broken down in Ensenada

Does anyone in the Ensenada area know of a good radiator shop, or mechanic that has the ability to pressure test a radiator system.

I have an 08 Chevrolet Silverado Duramax Diesel

I had the turbo replaced by the dealer in the U.S. but they assembled something wrong in the radiator hoses when they put it back together, and I have a leak I can't find.

I'm going to head over to the Chevy dealer by the harbor to see if they can check it, but I'd like to have a backup plan in case they can't.

Thanks...

Thanks Ron!

A guy we talked to when we broke down on Highway 3 (a story for later) mentioned that place but I couldn't remember the name.

I'll check it out

Ron,

THANK YOU FOR THE REFERENCE!

Radiadores Provenir was a great shop. Very knowledgable and I'm confident they fixed it properly. Radiator hoses aren't as simple as they used to be. For some reason they have decided to complicate the connections. No more simple rubber hoses and clamps.

Now if the road is still intact, we'll be on our way south today.

BajaCarpintero: Looks like we will be a day late. Should be there Saturday. It rained really hard in Ensenada last night, so I don't know what condition the road is in. Everything will depend on the road. I'll try to get to an internet connection this evening and let you know.

What a day. We left this morning heading South. I stopped to check for leaks several kilometers outside Maneadero. This time one of the trans cooler lines that they had to remove was leaking. Geez....headed back to Estero, unhooked the trailer and back to the shop. He fixed it pretty quickly ( was not tightened securely) so we were able to get back on the road and at least to San Quintin. So far no leaks. I think it's margarita time!

By the way the road wasn't affected at all by the rain and there's snow on the mountains behind Vicente Guererro. Looks pretty cool, and Estero Beach is pretty nice. The restaurant was good. Camping is a bit pricey though.

Carpintero, looks like we'll be there late Sunday morning now. I'll email.

Sorry we missed you Ron.

Made it to Mulege. Having dinner in Sr. Gecko right now. Great food!

Looks like repairs are holding so far. Rain all the way from San Quintin to Viscaino.

Hope to be home tomorrow

While NOT the funnest trip report I've ever read, definitely not dull, huh? I'm glad that you both eventually made it home safe & sound albeit poorer from all the repair costs & extra gas guzzled driving hither, thither & yon!!!

Whew...just got home. Feels like it took us 5 days....oops, it did!

Thank you Ron...it was your reference to the radiator shop that got us on the road. Next time North will be much more relaxed. We look forward to meeting you and hope we can arrange something.

Next time I'll get a reading before I go and save all the hassles.

Our breakdown was between Tecate and Ensenada at about K 85. After having the turbo replaced in California, one of the radiator hose connections they had to remove broke and we lost all the coolant, we weren't going anywhere. It wasn't repairable in the field. Oladulce remembered that we had roadside assistance with Bajabound's HDI Seguros and we gave them a call. It took several phone transfers and a lot of time before we were hooked up to a dispatcher in Ensenada. If you're ever in this situation, have them call you back; you'll definitely burn up all your minutes while you are transferred, and have to give your insurance information to at least 3 people.

Meanwhile a nice man pulled over and offered to bring his mechanic friend. We told him yes, please!. Two options are definitely better than one. The mechanic arrived as the HDI Ensenada dispatcher was telling me it would be about an hour before the tow arrived. Since it was nearly dark, we opted for the Mechanic.

The mechanic had a Ford pickup that looked like it was ready for a Monster Truck Rally. He chained our Chevy and travel trailer to his hitch and off we went.

He pulled us to his shop in Valle Guadalupe and went to work. He couldn't fix it permanently, but put it together well enough to get us to Ensenada. The Mechanic is Jose Acosta and his shop is called "EL Chino". Phone is 646-155-22-55. If you break down in that area he's definitely worth giving a call.

Thanks to BajaGringo we were later directed to Radiadores El Porvenir, who got us put back together and back on the road.
http://www.facebook.com/radelporvenir I highly recommend these guys for radiator system work.

By the way, the new roadside assistance number shown on signs throughout the peninsula, 074 produced nothing but a busy signal.

Wow.... baja, even that close to the border, is still the frontier.
Glad you had that mech offer!

One thing about over here in Nayarit.... Green Angels are everywhere on the 200 and they even have a permanent spot you can pull into.

It's quite interesting here.... but, I am really looking forward to when we can manage a trip to BOLA again.

Mexico and the Baja peninsula truly are like two separate countries. Hope you guys are doing well - Merry Christmas patch!
