Default Baja Cactus in SD

Over the years I've purchased cactus species here in San Diego and Riverside that are endemic to Baja California, and made kind of a Baja Cactus corner at my house. I thought I'd post a couple of pics.

There are the Organpipe Cactus from AZ (grow in Northern Baja, called Pitaya Dulce there I think). Those are the many armed ones present in most photos

The Dagger Cactus (skinny spiny thing in 2nd photo down) I got from a guy in Riverside County (called Pitaya Agria down there, although the Pitayas aren't really sour)

A couple of Barrel Cactus one found all over Baja, the other more typically found in BoLA. These are the reddish round things on the ground in the 3rd, 5th 6th and 7th photos down.

And one solitary finger of a Cardon (seen on the 4th photo down)

The Organpipes grow pretty fast up here in the Poway area, the Cardon not so much. The little barrels are actually growing fairly quick as well, they are about double the size they were last year. Maybe just a lot of rain this winter.

No boojum trees? LOL

I had a 'pet' cirio or boojum, in a pot (about an 18" tall branch, severed from its parent) from 1984 to 2004. It leafed out every year, made flowers, spiny tiny branches, those all dropped and that repeated itself each year. The main body grew about 4 inches overall. Termites or some insect got into the pot and killed it.. very sad!

See big ones today at the Wild Animal Park in San Pasqual (or whatever the Zoo is calling the place now). They are on the trail to the Condors...

Nice garden, and I like the rural area.

We have a natural cardon on our property. We started giving it about 5 gallons of water, once a month or so. It's grown about 1 1/2 feet in three years. We get very little rainfall though.

Boojums are so expensive here. It's like $300 for a small one thats about 3-4' high. I wanted one badly but bought something that looked sort of like it from Madagascar instead, and put it away from the Baja area.

Nice cactus photos and a beautiful yard!

David, I think the wild animal park is now called San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
