Anyone have any details about the murder of the Owner of Club Marena & Baja Country Club last night. He was shot about 5 times as he was driving on the Scenic Road in the Primo Tapia area. Another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire.

What a shame. That development at K38 is one of the best in all Baja. I debated whether or not to post the story here and then forgot about it. His SUV was ambushed near Primo Tapia after returning from business meetings in Ensenada, His business partner was not injured in the attack- but was taken away by ambulance in shock.

As the lack of legal National Land Titles continues to interfere with Baja investment- real estate along the baja coast will get more dangerous. If my memory serves me correctly he was giving 100 year land leases at the Baja Country Club when the legal maximum lease term in Mexico is 10 years. That would make all the leases unenforceable and a potential area of conflict.

The Rosarito Mayor just called for allowing direct foreign ownership of coastal land to level the investment playing field so people actually see the title to the land they are buying without it being hiddeen in a bank trust. That measure won 't move forward anytime soon, but his support for it is important. There will likley be more violence when the Rosarito Malecon begins construction downtown and people jockey for land they have no legal right to be on. jmho

I suspect, from my law enforcement background, that the murder was not a random act, rather well planned and possibly related either to a drug cartel or an extortion threat that Jaime disregarded.

I forgot to say we own a unit at Club Marena. As far as I know, the deceased, Jaime, was well thought of. I am a little surprised that more people on this site haven't posted any comment about this tragic event.

Saw and talked to him at a meeting with the other principal and admin staff of the country club Tuesday afternoon/evening. At about 6:45PM he and the others left as the meeting broke up, nothing remarkable in his actions, demeanor or speech indicated anything out of the ordinary.

The other individual in the vehicle was Juan Carlos Mues Partida, who I believe bought out Carlos Teran from his interest in the BCC. Their properties included the BCC, Club Marena and a project in TJ

This was either a targeted hit, or was to send a message to others.....who knows. Well planned and executed.

No one at the BCC has put out any official info on this, or the direction or future of the BCC (or in fact the other properties). Unknown if the family will step in, or sell their interest.

Never heard of any 100 year leases or 10 year leases at the BCC

Was he killed the evening after leaving the meeting you attended? If so, was this meeting well publicized in advance. I agree the murder was well planned.

Club Marena is one of Baja's true real estate success stories. The K38 location with an excellent facilty and planning. I have no idea how this dead man lived his life. Extortions and kidnappings are part of the cartels income stream. They have it down to an artform, and if you are targeted there is not much you can do to be safe that doesn't involve packing, running or hiding. Extortions and business disputes can get ugly fast. There have only been a few instances where a business man was kidnapped or killed in the area though and pretty much everyone has to pay someone off at that level of getting business done. jmho

Yes. He left the meeting around 6:45PM and was shot round 8PM. I didn't attend the meeting, I was there for the weekly Tuesday night dinner

Not publicized, but the meeting was an every Tuesday afternoon event. If somebody was watching, they would know his schedule and route.

With the toll road closed, someone could wait at La Mision and see all of the N/B traffic. His Lexus was not hard to spot

Someone who attended the meeting could have called to the suspects in the attack vehicle when the meeting adjourned? I would bet it was cartel, extortion related.

The people who attend the (every) Tuesday meeting at the BCC are/were his business partners and managers of the BCC. I doubt they would have been involved in the hit, but who knows (it is Mexico and anything is possible).......hell, it could have been anyone who lives or has a house at the BCC.....but that is a stretch also.

At this point, without any evidence, it could be anything, maybe even a jealous husband.....jumping to conclusions about cartel involvement is nearsighted.........the cartels have their hands full with taking over lime growing and shipping businesses
