Default Gardening and Photos

Well, I have wanted to post here and hope things get going --- so here I am. I did not want to post pictures posted on that other forum and I know how tiresome it can be to see the same pictures over and over again, so they are new and posted only here--well only on this Baja forum.

We do not live full time in Bahia Asuncion, BCS, but do spend most of our time here. John loves to garden, I have decided to take up photography as a hobby in retirement-- I may have to go back to work to support this very expensive hobby, but I am having fun learning.

While we have learned that there are a lot of things that will NOT grow with the salt and wind, we were really happy to return and see that these are growing VERY well.

And there will be more tomatoes to come.

And these are about the easiest flowers to grow anywhere---can´t spell it

And we were really happy to see that some of the wild flowers are still blooming. With a little water, these make a great ground cover.

Well, I hope this works for a first post. I used photobucket just because I already had these on photobucket.

And, even though these are in BCS, I am sure they would do very well in San Quintin.

Diane:

Love the color and detail in the photos. We love gardening and I am in the process of designing our front garden areas which will include a lot of color. Will share these with Cristina...

And we have a local friend with whom we share the tomatoes and they make killer salsa which they share back.

Thanks both of you for the nice comments. It is fun to see what grows and what doesn´t.

Very nice pictures and color. What kind of flowers are those that you say are easy to grow anywhere? They sure look nice.

Geraniums. I had to look up how to spell it! They are really strong. We have bought some and then break off a branch and stick it in the ground. Our place in in the sand dunes, so he help the soil the way the locals do. We did up some of the dirt around the mesquite trees and mix it in.

Nastursiams are another flower that grow like crazy in this environment. I will take some pictures of other plants that adapt well.

For one thing, an avocado tree is impossible. A little salty wind and a tiny little salt in the soil, and it is instant death. We quickly found out why there are no avocado trees in Bahia Asuncion.

As a fellow part-time / occasional Baja resident Diane, another trick I learned by accident is to eat my watermelon and spit the seeds around the edge of a palapa or at the base of a petate fence (the carrizo/bamboo woven panels used for walls, fences, ceilings etc).

In Spring foggy conditions and summer overnight humidity on the Pacific coast the palm leaves and bamboo will suck up an amazing amount of moisture and slowly drip, drip as the materials dry out every morning. My favorite place to eat watermelon was on a wall near a petate fence we had as a windblock which was right underneath leaves of our palapa.

We returned after a few months absence and found a sandia jungle! No planning and no irrigation had been required for this. We had a few tomatoes under the palapa overhang too, but not as many as yours.
