Default Is a place like San Quintin possible for us?

Our first baby step into Baja living was in a community just a little north of Rosarito.

We go to the States every week for mail & banking. We're still running active businesses, but doing it virtually now.

We leased for a year before making up our mind on what we really need/want in a place.

The post that Ron's friend just made about lots in San Quintin got us talking - is this possible for us?

We could figure out the banking and mail (online bill pay, etc), but there are some musts for us.

For the business:

- Need a way to send FedEx/DHL, etc packages about once every two weeks.

- Need VOIP or land line. That means fast, semi-reliable high speed Internet.

- Need fast, semi-reliable high speed. :-)

- Need a way to fax. (Maybe scan and just upload to secure site would work)

For personal:

- Near ocean with beach (not cliff)

- Cooler temps

- Fishing nearby

- Shopping, restaurants w/n 30 min

- My husband really wants to build & has experience as a contractor

- We're very adaptable.

The only challenge I see is the phone and Internet. So, is this possible? Land in a less developed area sounds really nice.

You're looking for a lot of civilization for such an isolated place. I'm not even sure Ron is in the grid.
No DSL.....Maybe Starband or Hughesnet. They call that fast but, fast is a relative term. It may be faster than dialup.
VOIP works only marginally.
FedEx / DHL ...available in Ensenada. Not sure what might be closer.

Maybe you should consider building a vacation house.

Dennis makes some very valid points. I suggest you look for yourself and decide. We are off grid currently but the project has been approved for bringing CFE in and the secretario del gobierno and secretario del desarollo social of Baja were onsite two weeks ago, making a commitment to have the project completed before year's end. There is some political payback for them in the deal as well as calling in some markers, so I am inclined to believe this is for real.

Internet is available via satellite and wireless. You need to find out if the bandwidth is sufficient for you. San Quintin is a small town and about a 25 minute drive from our place on the beach. It is a small town and may or may not have what you need. I like the remote feel, weather and lifestyle.

It works great for me - it may/may not for you...

BG -

What kind of speeds do you get off of your wireless? I saw the antenna on your casa in the construction pics...

Our internet speed varies daily but it has never really been an issue up until now for most of what I do. Just did a speed test now and got 2824 down, 595 up. I have participated in several web conferences using webex for live presentations where I was also using bandwidth via a simultaneous dial-in conference call on my voip line.

Not a problem yet...

Very similar to what I get here in the states on my wireless net provider. It appears that wireless is getting more and more available in Baja at least what little I have seen. How do they structure the payment/usage? Is there limits per monthly payment? What's monthly cost run you if you don't mind my asking?

In your particular situation I would recommend doing more research between the border and San Quintin prior to a purchase, ie, rent in an area you "think" you would like for 6 months to see if it offers all that you want prior to a purchase. There are many areas, but one needs to weigh their personal/health issues into the factor. Many places between will fit your requirements. Just my 2 cents...

I absolutely agree on that one and tell everybody they should rent before even thinking about buying anything. Rent is cheap right now and easy to walk away from if things don't work out as you had planned.

As far as the cost of my internet I seem to recall it is around 350 pesos per month or something close to that. I always just pay up several months in advance so I don't have to worry about it. I am not aware of any limit placed on my d/l each month as I know some services do. You do have to pay for the equipment and install which was around $3-400 if I remember correctly.

Confused Re: Is a place like San Quintin possible for us?

So, is someone going to have to make the distinction between San Quintin and San Quentin?

Gotta believe that 99.9% of folks in San Quentin would rather be in San Quintin. Especially for the cadillac margaritas!
