Default Where Can We Find City Maps With Neighborhoods Marked?

Like Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, La Paz...

When I read the news, I don't know where a lot of the neighborhoods are located and would like to.

Thanks.

The way I've always done it is to go to a good bookstore in town. Locally published maps of Tijuana and Ensenada have been around since at least the 1960s. Guía Rojí got into the business not too long ago and now offer Tijuana, La Paz, and Mexicali.

The planning department of each municipio also maintains a master-plan of their colonias and fraccionamientos ... I think that's the origin of don Queso's Tijuana map ... but not all municipios make their work readily available. For Rosarito you might ask Señor FRAO (Foreign Residents Attention Office), Antonio Ruiz, garuiz@rosarito.gob.mx

In case you haven't discovered already, the most unreliable source of this information here in Mexico is what's online. Google Maps and Yahoo Maps can get you turned inside-out in no time.

This doesn't have neighborhoods, but is just great for cities and getting around them.

I have found the maps with neighborhoods marked at local 7/11-PEMEX stations

Neighborhood names here are like street signs. They don't need to be displayed because the locals know where they are and nothing else matters.

Like I stated before Google Maps has a very detailed map that even has the Neighborhoods listed and when you find the adress you are looking for you can walk down the street and view the place you are looking for. It cant get any easier than that.

Yeah but there are colonias in Tijuana where even the locals disagree as to which side of the street belongs to which colonia. I guess there is a stigma in belonging to some colonias and some folks prefer to be associated with the adjoining neighbourhood...

The word, "Colonia," is loaded with stigma. it denotes a neighborhood for the less fortunate. What people would rather claim is an association with a Fraccionamiento.

So true - I saw an entire block of houses in Tijuana facing a fraccionamiento that all changed their home facade to varying degrees in an attempt to look like part of the development. A few did a remarkable job - others not so much...

As a tijuanense, I would have to disagree as amiably and as politely as possible.

A fraccionamiento is a housing development while a colonia is a concentration of neighbors. Fraccionamientos are a recent invention of construction companies -- they buy a large tract of land and break (fraccionar) it into housing units. Colonias are where people build their own homes nearby one another.

Here in Tijuana, some of the wealthiest areas are Colonia Cacho and Colonia Chapultepec. We also have fraccionamientos in Otay that have given rise to jokes about Otay Barbie, the Tijuana soccer-mom.
