Default CFE to build new power plant outside La Paz

Spain’s Abengoa Wins Contract to Build Power Plant in Mexico

Latin America Herald Tribune
Friday, June 16, 2011

SEVILLE, Spain – Spain’s Abengoa has been selected by Mexican state-owned utility Comision Federal de Electricidad to build a $91 million power plant in Baja California Sur state.

The Baja California Sur IV plant, located 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) from the city of La Paz, will be the third of its kind to be built by Abengoa for the CFE in the northwestern state, the Spanish company said in a statement Thursday.

The 42.7 MW conventional electricity generation plant, to be built under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction format by Abengoa, is expected to come online within 23 months.

“The plant has been designed to reflect Abengoa’s commitment to the environment, in everything related to sustainable development, in the interests of conserving natural wealth,” the statement said.

Baja California Sur IV will have an advanced system that reduces nitrous oxide emissions, as required by Mexican environmental legislation.

“It will also have a system for using the residual heat from the plant in order to increase its overall performance,” the statement said.

Abengoa in 2001 delivered the 39.3 MW Puerto San Carlos II plant to the CFE, located near the town of San Carlos. Six years later, the 42.7 MW Baja California Sur II plant came into commercial operation in the same location where Baja California Sur IV is being planned.

“Both plants have similar characteristics, although the current plant is superior in its modern emissions control system,” the statement said.

Wow, that Spanish company is picking up lots of building contracts all over, including a couple of solar farms north of the border.

I wonder if this plant will help extend the grid outside La Paz or is it just to keep up with a growing demand?
