ISOFOTON to supply 1MW pilot PV plant in Mexico
ElectroIQ.com Wednesday August 3, 2011 ISOFOTON announced it will supply a total of 4,172 ISF-240 solar panels, along with the necessary single-axis ISOTRACKER solar trackers to construct Mexico’s first photovoltaic solar power pilot plant, which will be located in the municipality of Mulegé close to the city of Santa Rosalía in Baja California Sur. Following a tender process, the company MICROM, S.A. was awarded the contract for the plant, while ISOFOTON will help with the construction by delivering the technology, solar modules and trackers needed to design, plan, construct and develop the facility. The project named “Pilot 1 MW Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant in Santa Rosalía” will entail an investment of 78 million Mexican pesos and marks the first photovoltaic plant featuring tracking technology to be rolled out by the Mexican Federal Electricity Board (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) in the Republic of Mexico. Its construction stems from the energy policy of the Federal Government, encompassing the 2007-2012 National Development Plan, which is committed to renewable energies, particularly photovoltaic solar energy. ![]() source... Santa Rosalia is bustling since the copper mine started back up again. Trucks and lots more traffic through there now. When we picked up Wanna Go's Hughes system near San Lucas Cove a couple of weeks ago, her friend said that the Copper company had approached him about buying some property and building employee housing because they were desperate to find housing for their engineers and plant managers.
I wonder if the choice of location for this solar plant is related to the copper mine? |

It probably factored in.
Mexico has been on a huge push to go green, building more and more solar / wind power plants across the country. My crystal ball predicts that move will turn to gold in a few more years. Like it or not, even with new oil discoveries and increasing production as much as possible, oil is going to get a lot more expensive. China/India will lead the way as the rest of the world discovers the "joy" of owning and driving cars. Add to that the increased demand to support growing industrialization in the third world via the global economy. The cost of producing electricity will parallel the increasing cost of oil. Mexico has long endured government subsidized electrical rates and anything they can do to help mitigate the costs makes a lot of sense. Really makes you wonder how (relatively) little progress we see now to build new solar / wind plants NOB.
