There is no way Otay Mesa can handle all the traffic. I predict that the southbound wait times will rival the northbound traffic.

Probably another good reason to consider using Tecate for southbound...

This is something we have come to know and expect from Mexico. The big surprise here is that the USA is the one left standing with their pants down on this one...

Or take the opportunity to smuggle all those Flat Screens you've been dreaming about because they won't be checking cars like they do at SY.
Always look for the bright side.

Actually, there's plenty of blame to go around. The U.S. has been messing things up since the beginning of the millennium, when they started their so-called Smart Border project. Here we are in 2012 and they've only gotten as far as what they projected for 2005.

It was the gringos who have been wanting to take over the Puerta México part of the San Ysidro border all along. That's why the Mexican authorities continue to develop what they call El Chaparral, that no-man's-land between UETA and Plaza Las Américas, as their new part of the border-crossing.

Problem is that UETA and Plaza Las Américas don't want this and they have mobilized political influences north of the border to help them. Even Casa Familiar and the idiot Ben Hueso are lobbying on their behalf.

Mexico announced a decade ago that they were planning on collaborating with the U.S. on widening the port of entry and that their primary southbound access would be El Chaparral but that they also wanted to open a secondary access, for pedestrians, at Colonia Nezacoyótl because so many Gästarbeiter live in Colonia Libertad, which is on that side of the border-crossing.

Then Felipe Calderón became the imposed president and everything on the border went sideways. Even members of his own party around here hate FeCal. That's how, in 2012, the PRI candidate accused of homosexuality and murder wound up getting elected over FeCal's own candidate whose only defect (apart from her hopeless Catholicism) is her alcoholism.

So last week Mexico opened that secondary access in Col Neza at the same time that they closed Puerta México. It's not like this wasn't announced, it's only that the announcements made no sense. We all said to each other, "Not even FeCal is that stupid." But he was.

FeCal does not understand what we call our Border Reality. That's why no one here likes him. Vehicular traffic will have to pass through Puerta México until such time as El Chaparral is finished. Otay Mesa and the 905 simply cannot handle the volume. And Tecate?! OMFG! Has anyone tried to use Tecate on a three-day weekend?

For what it's worth, the business interests in Tijuana were instrumental in the imposition of Peña Nieto and so have direct access to the people pulling his strings. They did not like Calderón's SIEDE, they did not like Calderón's currency restrictions, and they will not sit still when they lose medical tourism as a result of this lame-duck foolishness at the border-crossing.

Does anyone remember when FeCal announced that all persons entering Mexico would have to produce a current passport? Yes? And for how long was he able to pull that one off?

Not a single day.

So let's just wait and see. There will be a whole new idiot running things come December.
