Telcel or Movistar - which cell service do you use in Baja?

I have been a telcel client for over a decade. I considered movistar several years ago but was scared off by the claims we heard of poor coverage and service. A close friend here made the switch to movistar last year and is really happy. She claims that the coverage up here near the border now rivals that of telcel and the service is less expensive.

We have five phones on our contract which is ending next month. Before renewing I thought I'd shop around and ask the rest of you which service you use and why?

I still use TelCel Amigo but we have been thinking about making a switch. Are you thinking about going with a contract or pay as you go?

We were on Telcel but switched to Movistar a few years back. Telcel has an extremely poor signal out here on our beach. Movistar is 5 bars.

I have both. Like Ron says, only Movistar works out on the beach by our abulon project and Telcel has better coverage on the Colonet - Ensenada section of highway that I frequently travel on. I really can not afford to be without my phone so it just makes sense this way. You are right - Movistar is less expensive and the coverage does seem to be much better now up in the border area.

We use the movistar pay as you go phone in Mexico. It gives us decent service at our place outside El Rosario and really good service when we go out in our boat from Punta Baja to fish. I add 300-400 pesos every 6-8 weeks and it never seems to run out.

I did but it only works near the border in Baja. South of Maneadero it cuts out...
