Smile Registering a new vehicle with Sentri

How long approx. does it take when you register a new vehicle online with CBP before you get approval for your existing Sentri Pass? I know they stopped issuing windshield stickers, however, do you, after receiving approval online have to take the vehicle to the Sentri Office for visual inspection?

From what I have been hearing and reading on other forums, can take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to get the conditional approval on the vehicle, then you make an appointment for the inspection

OH, BTW....it appears now the CBP is requiring your vehicle registration state to match your drivers license issuing state or the other way around. A SENTRI renewal was denied for a friend because she had CA drivers license and South Dakota registration....she had to get CA approved insurance then drive to CA DMV in San Diego and register her car. before they would renew her SENTRI

They are forcing them to make a choice. I have been hearing rumors lately that South Dakota is going to begin requiring a South Dakota DL for vehicle registration as well. Looks like people are going to have to make a choice - switch back to California registration or go all in with a South Dakota DL...

Does anyone have a good phone number for the Otay Mesa Sentri Office. I can't find one.

I just checked with the Otay Mesa Sentri Office. The advised that it could take upt to 20 weeks to get my new vehicle approved. Our efficient Government at it's best.

I doubt it will take the full 20 weeks. Although they do have to run the VIN and license plate and see if they are wanted or suspected in any suspicious activity.

It takes less than 15 seconds to run the plate and vin number.

They also check past title (owners) and registration info.

It was a new car I bought so the reg. & title were in the car dealership name. I just don't think that taking up to 20 weeks is a reasonable period of time. We would not accept this if the process was done with a private sector business instead of the federal govt..

I learned from the Sentri Office that all applications nationwide are sent to Vermont for processing. I also was told that the Sentri Office no longer handles walk ins, that you must have an appointment.

And since SENTRI is a non-criminal background/licensing check, it goes to the bottom of the priority pile in NCJIS.....and those people in Vermont are probably GS-3's

If it was a new car, then it shouldn't have been titled or registered ever before. If it already had a title and registration, then Teniente comment stands.

We did outsource a lot of security to Blackwater in Iraq. Perhaps we should do the same here in the USA?

A new car has to have a title. It is titled in the name of the car dealership you buy it from however it is not registered until sold.
