PURE BAJA ~ Whales
No way can these pics compete with the quality of Ken Bondy shots, but they are special to ME, since this was my first experience going out to see the whales! :icon_e_biggrin:

Never get tired of whale watching, no matter how many times we go. Nice pix---loved the sun cover on the one boat---great idea!

Anyone who isn't left breathless from a close up, hands on experience with a whale is either brain dead or without a heart. Love those photos legs...

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
No way you need to feel inferior to Ken Bondy. At least when experiencing the whales. It is a life changing moment. For all of you who have had the chance to touch those magificent creatures, you absolutely are ahead of the pack. We were unable to visit the whales this year due to health problems. It was the first year in a decade that we missed out. So, legs, where was this experience? For someone in La Paz, the obvious would be Mag Bay. We've done Ojo de Liebres and San Ignacio. Haven't made it to Mag Bay

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
Thanks! I agree....the ONLY thing that could have made that day any more special to me is if one would have come close enough to our boat for me to have touched. But I was so in awe of their size, majesty & gentle nature, that I was happy simply being in their presence (a very humbling experience!) & having gotten the few decent shots I got! In hindsight, I probably missed quite a few good shots because I was too busy absorbing mental images! :icon_lol:

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
Nice pictures. We haven't been for several years, I hope this upcoming winter we'll finally be able to go again. I think that was one of the most memorable trips we've had.

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
My sister-in-law & friends from NOB are here visiting & since none of them have ever had the experience of having gone whale watching, I suggested a day trip to San Carlos. We caught the tail-end of the season, so we only saw two adult whales & both of those chose to keep their distance. It was a tad disappointing for me since I'd hoped that their first trip could have paralleled my first trip.....as far as numbers, babies & coming right up to the boat for some human interaction. And I'd hoped that I could actually touch one of these magnificent creatures, but they were thrilled nonetheless!
Most of the pics I got were too long distance to be meaningful, but here are the best. See what I mean by tail-end of the season? |

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
is whale watching off Magdalena Bay generally better than the Ojo de Liebre viewing near guerrero negro?

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
Uzun, I don't have a definitive answer to your question since I've gone out from San Carlos both times I've gone. But based on the extreme differences in those two trips, I'm strongly inclined to believe that time of year is most likely the greatest factor in both number of whales & whale behavior. But that's pure speculation on my part!

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
Once in a while the whales will come very close to the beach in Rosarito. These guys had their heads down eating the whole time. I didn't get that Discovery Channel breach photo everyone hopes to capture- just some whale tail.

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
You see humpbacks and grey whales in particular quite a bit off San Diego, but they dont come up to your boat the way they do in those lagoons down in baja.

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
What beautiful photos. The whales seem to be very interested in the people, as well as the reverse. Quite an experience to get up close and personal, eh? I hope to enjoy the privilege one day, myself.

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
Very nice photos. Out at Punta Baja we have a favorite spot to watch the whales go by in spring and fall. It is amazing how close some of them come to the shore.

Re: PURE BAJA ~ Whales
They seem interested in the boats and people at the lagoons in Baja, but generally out in the ocean in So Ca they avoid everyone and especially boats.
