EAST COUNTY — A 42-year-old truck driver was arrested Thursday night for attempting to smuggle more than 800 pounds of marijuana through the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8 near Pine Valley.

U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered the suspect, a San Bernardino resident, about 11:15 p.m. as he approached the checkpoint in a tractor-trailer. A K-9 unit alerted agents to the trailer.

An inspection of the vehicle revealed a false wall inside.

Agents discovered 34 large bundles of marijuana behind the wall. The marijuana weighed more than 800 pounds and has an estimated street value of more than $400,000.

The driver was turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, along with the marijuana.

I should have figured that a cop would catch me on that one...
