Short answer....NO!

Longer reasons why....you have to have a Mexican DL to legally buy a vehicle here. You have to be a resident to get a Mexican DL....i.e., you have to have an FM3 or FM2 to get a DL. USA insurance does not cover a Mexican plated vehicle. You have the choice of getting Mexican insurance....or going without (not recommended!).

Depending on your destination & how far you'd be from your vehicle would govern how to proceed. Do you have any friends with an old beater you'd trust your truck to & who you could trade vehicles with for the duration of your trip? But you'd have to have a letter from the title holder authorizing you to be taking the vehicle across the border.

What you consider inexpensive may not be down here. There's a big demand for beaters, especially trucks.
Don't even think about it.

You´d be better off buying a beater truck in San Diego and then resell it again when you get back. I have a lot of friends who come down in some pretty nice vehicles and so far no problems. Just be aware of where you are and have fun...
