Default Armed robbery and gunfight in San Quintín bank

SAN QUINTÍN.- An assault on a HSBC bank branch in colonia Lázaro Cárdenas left a farm worker wounded in the head by a bullet, and he is in grave condition and taken to the closest clinic.

According to the first reports, around 10AM, a group of presumed assailants entered the bank branch and took the money from a customer. However, the victim was armed, took out a 9mm pistol and shot at the robbers.

Two bullets his a Ranger pick-up and another hit a farm worker who had nothing to do with the assault.

At this time there is an large security operation under way among the police agencies, the Army, federal, ministerial and municipal police.

The first unofficial report says three people have been arrested, but as of the moment it has not been determined if they participated or not in the attack.

Robbed before

The victim of the assault is the son of the owner of Abigal market, a business which about one year ago was assaulted and lost approximately one million pesos (US$80,000).

The son of the businessman has been detained for having wounded a person with a firearm. It is know that he was carrying four briefcases full of money when the was assaulted inside the bank branch.

It appears the loot has been recovered.

Of course the big question is how does a small market make a four-briefcase cash deposit? Is tourism really picking up down there or what?!...

...The innocent bystander who was shot in the head died a few hours later. He was identified as Rafael Ortiz Bautista, 18 years old.

I had just left the very same bank and watched the police fly by me at the tire shop just minutes later. We all know the family that owns the market Avigal and my heart goes out to the young victim who was left dead by an errant bullet. Very, very sad day in San Quintin.

Avigal is the largest grocery store in San Quintin and the family owns other stores in the area as well. He was making the deposit from the weekend receipts...

That amount of money is normal for them to carry to the bank every Monday? Certainly there must be a safer way. He did kill a young man protecting his money. Justice in this case will be painful.

They get a huge amount of traffic over the weekend - especially this time of year, Avigal is a huge market and has a large second floor that is full of electronics, housewares, appliances, etc. That is a normal weekend's take for them.

As far as what happened - I totally agree. Many here are commenting the very same thing. I think that to a degree they went through what we did - they just became too accustomed to the easy going way of the valley here and let their guard down. Word on the street is that the perps are from Tijuana - SQ must look like an easy mark to them.

We all must adapt to the changing times (unfortunately)...

Not the first gun fight in this area. Wonder if the store owner had a permit for the "9"? He could be facing prison, unless of course there is a payoff, wealthy family and all. 1million pesos over a weekend is a pretty large hall.

I thinks 9's are reserved for military use. The shop owner likely has enough clout to pay the family of the young man he killed some restitution and walk away. Last year robbers held up everyone waiting in line inside a Rosarito Bank (twice actually) so just getting the money in the bank door isn't safe enough. Should be though.

About 20 years ago 3 guys held up the bank in San Quintin. Military shot them all out at the beach (Campo San Ramon).

not much has changed except the players. Today the gamgs rivalsl would do the shooting, but more likley they would be tortured, cut up and bagged- not shot.
