From the photo, looks like it will be awhile until the road is fixed? Is it closed in both directions now?

Yes, closed in both directions. Southbound traffic being diverted to the free road at LaMision, northbound traffic diverted to the free road at San Miguel. Other option is to cross southbound at Tecate. Estimates on repairs/new construction about 1 year.

Absolutely amazing that just the one truck appears to have been the only vehicle caught by the slide! Hope the driver had a change of shorts with him! Does the toll road insurance cover "acts of god"? But then Mexican ingenuity just might get that truck & trailer out of there .....IF the area doesn't slide more/again.

no quick fix for this. the Ensenada-TJ commute will be a bear for a long long time. quite the landslide- appears to be all sand... liquefication from the quake?

I think it will take years before repairs are complete. May have to totally reroute that portion of the highway.

The "speed bumps" in La Mision might be needing repair too .... with the increased traffic

Hope the extra traffic doesn't cause to many problems ... emergency response would be difficult on that two lane road .. with the added traffic

Take your time, no rush ... you're on vacation and/or retired ... hopefully

I've seen slumps like this along the north San Diego County shoreline. Typically in an area where soft sandstone is layered with clay. Usually follows a heavy rain.

Interestingly the slumps didn't result in a lot of lateral movement at the base, sometimes a few feet, never more than 15. The cliff just seemed to re-compact itself to a higher density, so that the same amount of material occupied less area.

In most of those instances there were continuing slumps/slides on an every two to five year cycle. The railroad dumped car loads of crushed rock into one unstable area and it seemed to resolve the issue. But in that case the slide was about 1/10th the size of this one.

I hope for the locals sake that a lasting solution can be found quickly.

I spoke with an engineer with SCT that told me today that they are seriously considering the idea to open up a road from the Bajamar bridge to connect to the free road. That would eliminate about 30km of the current La Mision detour route and he thinks they can have it ready in 60 days from approval. He mentioned that the route was already scheduled to be paved to allow for projected work to the toll road which is now collapsed.

The current proposal for the long term fix to the toll road is attached...

Where is the money to come from. Maybe they will start a toll on the free road?

The toll road is owned by the federal government and any funding would (I presume) come from Mexico City...

I think a conservative estimate of the cost of a project like this to be 500 Million US and take a minimum of 2 years to complete.

Well, at least they don't have to worry about EPA, BLM, OHSA, DOT, NHTSA, National Farm Bureau, the Sierra Club or the "Save the Butterfly" committee

They can use all the tourist card money they have collected since 2000 when they started charging for it! That money should go to Baja, and not D.F.! ;)

I believe that the 60 day estimate was to open the bypass road from Bajamar to Guadalupe Valley, not the repair of the toll road...
